If you are looking to start a new career, there is no better time to train to become an electrician! The UK is experiencing an unprecedented electrician shortage and the demand for skilled workers is at an all-time high.
Why is there an Electrican shortage
There are a few reasons for the huge shortage of skilled workers such as electricians.
Experienced electricians are retiring faster
The first cause behind the electrician shortage is experienced electricians leaving the industry. While many retirements are part of the normal cycle of employment, many are retiring early.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated retirement rates for Baby Boomers across all industries. Research reported that the percentage of retired people over the age of 55 increased in both 2020 and 2021.
All Baby Boomers will be 65 or older by the year 2030. Since this generation represents such a large part of the population, their retirement will have a bigger effect than previous generations.
Not enough new electricians
Experienced electricians leaving the industry wouldn’t be a problem if the younger generation were replacing them. Unfortunately, they aren’t.
One potential reason for this change could be that the younger generation just isn’t as interested in skilled labour. Instead of attending a trade school or taking on an apprenticeship, young adults are enrolling in university courses for things like technology and media.
Gen Z workers also find value in flexible working and remote work, which isn’t always possible on tight job schedules where you have to be on site.
Why should you train to become an electrician?
Despite the reasons listed above, becoming an electrician is one of the best choices you can make if you’re looking for a new career path.
Opportunity for growth
Becoming an electrician opens up opportunities that lead to a life-long, rewarding career. From entry-level, you can work your way up to middle management, engineering roles or owning and running your own business. Within the industry, many electricians select a specialty that they focus on such as construction, green energy, automation, manufacturing and more.
You’ll always be in demand
There will always be electricity and we will always rely on it. In fact, the electrical industry is constantly evolving with changing technologies, electrical systems need to be installed and maintained by professionals in domestic, commercial, industrial, and mining industries.
On-the-job training
A huge benefit to becoming an electrician is that you won’t have an unimaginable amount of student debt to earn a great living. In fact, as an apprentice electrician, you’ll be able to earn while you learn your trade. That means that, while others are attending university with no guarantee of a job after they graduate, you’ll be earning a decent wage and completing your electrician course at the same time.
