At The Skills Centre, we focus on providing a clear, structured route to becoming a fully qualified floor layer. Our aim is simple: give you the practical skills, support and confidence you need to build a successful career in flooring installation across commercial and domestic environments.

Our Floor Layer Apprenticeship is designed for learners with little or no prior experience. From your first day of training right through to becoming a competent floor layer, we guide you every step of the way with industry-recognised teaching and assessments. You’ll install textile/resilient coverings (carpets, vinyl, linoleum, rubber) or wood/laminate flooring, working in diverse building types.

Training is flexible and built around your employment. With strong employer partnerships, our approach has a proven track record across all ability levels. You’ll receive the knowledge, practice and guidance you need to progress quickly and safely.

As part of the programme, you’ll develop competence in preparing subfloors, measuring, cutting, fitting and finishing various floorcoverings to high standards, giving you the skills and confidence required to work professionally within the flooring industry.

Qualifications

  • Level 2 Floor Layer Apprenticeship Standard (Textile/Resilient or Wood options)

When Qualified you will be ready for...

  • Work as a floor layer installing carpets, vinyl, linoleum, rubber, laminate or wood flooring in domestic and commercial properties
  • Handle full installations from subfloor preparation to final finishing in homes, offices, retail spaces and public buildings
  • Join specialist flooring contractors, construction firms or maintenance teams nationwide
  • Take on domestic refurbishments, new-build projects or large-scale commercial flooring contracts
  • Operate as self-employed or for national flooring companies with high demand for skilled installers
  • Progress to senior installer, team leader or specialist roles in areas like resilient, textile or wood flooring
  • Expand into related trades or supervisory positions in interior fit-out and construction projects
