Since almost all countries worldwide are pursuing sustainable long-term energy solutions, it makes sense that employment within the renewable energy industry is set to see a big boost.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report, the accelerated uptake of renewable energy could boost the total energy job opportunities to 100 million by 2050. If you’re interested in becoming a renewable energy specialist, then now is a great time to take on a career in the field.
The effect of the pandemic on renewable energy jobs
The number of jobs in renewable energy worldwide increased in 2020, despite the huge economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an annual report on clean energy employment, the IRENA and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) said there were 12 million jobs in renewable energy and its supply chain last year, a third of them in solar power.
This is a rise from 11.5 million jobs in 2019. This shows that not even a global pandemic can slow the advancement of renewable energy!
The decline of fossil fuels
Most of the fossil fuel jobs in extraction or other activities have been steadily declining since 2012 when the gas and oil industries reached their peak. As a result, people are looking for new opportunities in something more sustainable and reliable.
Today, jobs in clean energy are becoming more available and well-paid because they are more in demand. It is predicted that there will be 150,000 renewable energy careers created in the UK alone, six times more than nuclear energy.
The reason for such demand? Economic indicators. Businesses have realised that sustainable development is key to success, long-term performance and investment. Also, the prices of solar and wind products have dropped, making them more affordable.
Start your career in renewable energy today
If you have an interest in engineering or the future, this sector might be for you! Your job benefits the planet’s future, reducing the use of fossil fuels and other non-renewable energy sources. If the environment is something you are passionate about, and you might find accomplishment in supporting clean energy, becoming a Renewable Engineer sounds like the perfect job for you. It is also a great opportunity to become part of an industry that is guaranteed to be secure in the future for the reasons mentioned above.
Renewable Energy Courses at The Skills Centre
You can choose from a range of courses that will provide you with the necessary qualifications needed to become a renewable energy specialist. Depending on the level of your qualification, you will be able to work in different areas of the industry sector.
You’ll most likely need a form of NVQ (National Vocational Qualification). You can study for NVQs once you have passed your GCSEs in Mathematics, English Language and Science at the appropriate level (A* to C). Once you have completed your NVQ, you can go on to achieve more qualifications to specialise in a particular field. For example, you could go on to achieve a Higher National Diploma or even a Degree.
At The Skills Centre, we can help find the right vocational course for you. Get in touch to discuss your options and kickstart your renewable energy career today!
